Depression: It’s more than just about feeling SAD

Because the symptoms of conditions like Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and insomnia are often taken lightly, people suffering from such conditions may not realize that they are dealing with something more complex.   

How often do we see people that are “feeling blue”. Quiet often though, while feeling sad is one of the symptoms of depression, depressed individuals may wrongly believe that taking over-the-counter (OTC) medication will solve the problem. This attitude of negative self-help hides the root cause of their depression.

The truth is much more involved, and if timely therapy and other interventions aren’t sought, things could quickly go from bad to worse!

Depression - Know the symptoms

When people are clinically depressed, thoughts of suicide are very common.  But before things get that far, they often display a number of clear symptoms, such as:

  • Being “sad” all the time
  • Displaying bouts of irritability
  • Becoming increasingly anti-social
  • Lack of sleep
  • Loss of appetite
  • Inability to concentrate or focus

The fact is that they are in denial. They feel that seeking therapy for their condition may isolate them from friends and family.

The fact however is that negative self-help actions, like self-prescribing medication that could worsen their condition, can do more harm than good. And the sooner people suffering from depression realize that, the quicker they can seek appropriate forms of therapy to help them though their situations.

Unless you are a trained professional, symptoms of depression are hard to pinpoint. A vast majority of suicide attempts are often preceded by bouts of depression. Sadly though, because there are so many varieties and “degrees” of depression (Major Depressive Disorder (MDD); Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD); Dysthmia; Bipolar Depression; Psychotic Depression), people don’t often seek the right therapy for their condition, until it’s too late!

From mood-altering medication, to psychological evaluations and psychiatric therapy, there are a number of effective ways for managing and treating depression. Depending on your symptoms, medical professionals may prescribe:

  • Selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants; or
  • Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)

Alternately, Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or psychotherapy, combined with medication such as Lithium might be used.  However, seeking help early on in the cycle is paramount.
